How does she see herself?
In my opinion, Josephine sees herself as a teenager with many troubles that she needs to face every single day. She lives with her mother and sometimes she thinks about her father.
What ‘hang-ups’ or problems does she have?
She has problems at school with the Sisters and her classmates. At home, she has problems with her mother sometime and with her grandmother recently. Then when she meets her father, she now has another problem to solve. Her problems are quite many, but it is normal in this world. Basically, her problems with her mother and granny and her (old) father are not very serious. A teenager in her situation will have the same trouble and I witnessed one.
How do others see her?
People around Josephine look at her and think that she is a bastard, a child without her father. Her friends think about her as a good friend (I am not sure about this).
What type of person is Josephine – how would you describe her to a friend?
For me, Josephine is a funny girl who lives with her mother. She is kind of trouble maker, but overall, she is a nice girl. She has her feeling about the people around her and the community that she is in. She is in a group of four girls, which are four weirdos in the school. She now understands more about her father, who left her when her mother was pregnant.
Do you “like” her so far? Why? Why not? Give detailed reasons for your answers.
I like this girl so far when I am reading this book. I like her because of her personality. She is quite a strong girl. She looks outside a seventeen – teenager, lives normally day passes day with her everyday problems that need to be solve, but inside, she is just want to raise a rebellion to herself and her communities. I also like her because of her mature thinking, and she is intelligent. She can get a scholarship to go to school. Her thinking is different from
Describe your reactions to the situations she faces, such as:
• family expectations : I don’t really know what I should do if I am in the situation like that. May be I will try my best to calm the family down, as well as the expectations they have for me. I don’t really want to have problems, especially in my family.
• school expectations : I will follow the rules, but if something is so over my limit, I won’t do that and may be have the hostile attitude.
• peer group pressure : I have some best friends, and I’m quite please with them. I don’t feel any pressure from my friends
